Great question! Let's break it down.
According to the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, "Counselling/psychotherapy is the skilled and principled use of relationship to facilitate self-knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth and the optimal development of personal resources. The overall aim is to provide an opportunity for people to work towards living more satisfyingly and resourcefully."
While my clients leave this experience feeling more resourceful, self-knowledgeable, and more accepting of their emotions and self. I am purposefully not a therapist. Not being a therapist affords me the freedom to combine more modalities and to create a strong sisterhood with my clients. We often part forever friends bonded in the intimate experience of our journey together, even if we never see each other again.
I have deep respect for the professionals who take the path of traditional therapy. And, I know, it's not for everyone. There are those who find it difficult to heal in a clinical setting or within the scope of traditional talk therapy.
I relate the difference to birthing in a hospital vs. at home. Hospital births are the norm and many women return home with a beautiful healthy baby; however, very few have a transcendent, spiritually transformative story to share about her experience.
After my first son was born at home, on my living room floor, with hypnosis music playing gently in the background and the lights dimmed low, my midwife helped me up off the floor and into the shower. She washed me, dried me, dressed me, helped me into bed and kissed me on the forehead before saying good-night, placing my baby in my arms.
That is the difference.
